Visit Montilla
Americanist Tour
This route combines art, gastronomy and landscapes and explore the city from the point of view of miscegenation.
Montilla is one of the most related cities with America in Andalusia. From the first news about the New World and the beginning of colonization, there were many inhabitants from Montilla who embarked looking for new opportunities or to evangelize people from overseas, as is the case of San Francisco Solano who would go down in history as the evangelizer of America.
It was in 1560 when the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega arrived in Spain from Cusco, establishing himself in Montilla, where he began his literary career.
Another remarkable character of our town who is closely related to America is Diego de Alvear y Ponce de León who embarked from Rio de la Plata in 1774. He served as commissioner of the Commission of the Limits between Spain and Portugal in South America, reason why he had to settle down in the jungle between Parana and Uruguay rivers.
In 1899, after the Great War it was Adolfo Jiménez-Castellanos y Tapias, inhabitant from Montilla, who signed the armistice agreement on behalf of the Spanish Crown and turn Cuba to USA.
