Cardinal Cisneros
The Capitulations of Granada kept certain protections for the rights of those Christians converted to Islam and for all Muslims who remained in the peninsula, who could practice their religious rites.
In the summer of 1499, Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, Archbishop of Toledo, arrived in Granada with the aim of evangelizing the city using methods that forced conversions and violated the agreements of the Capitulations.
Several authors establish in these facts the triggering of the Rebellion of the Alpujarras (1499-1501). These revolts served the Catholic Monarchs as justification to definitively abolish the Capitulations of Granada, forcing all Muslims to convert to Catholicism or be expelled from Spain.
