Siege on Tájara and Montefrío
The war against the Nasrid kingdom of Granada dragged on for ten years of incessant combats, skirmishes, guerrillas, plundering raids and sieges. These years of war shaped the strong personality of the future “El Gran Capitán” , who would become part of the military circle closest to the Catholic Monarchs as captain of the mesnadas sent by his brother Alonso de Aguilar.
Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba will play an important role in the conquest of valuable and strategic places, such as Loja, Tájara (1483), Íllora (1486) or Montefrío (1486). As a reward for his brilliant military actions, Queen Isabel I of Castile granted him the governorship of Íllora
